North East Muay Thai Scene 2019
The North East Muay Thai scene has been extremely competitive for many years, with the likes of Paul Hamilton, Craig Willis, Gaz Mcallister, Craig Jose and Michael Dicks having come out of the area as champions on the UK, European and world stages. Some of their proteges are now climbing that very same ladder. Here is a look at the North East Muay Thai scene in 2019.
With the nickname “Number Juan”, Juan Cervantes currently tops the UK Light Cruiserweight division. Fighting out of Northern Kings, Juan is one of Craig Jose’s top fighters, having racked up 30 wins from 40 fights. Juan is the current WTKA World Title holder and winner of the UK K1 Rankings “KO of the Year” with his head kick against Fassal Mehdi on Enfusion 68. At 31 years old, he is in his prime, with more accolades yet to come his way.
Current number 4 in the UK Junior Flyweight rankings, Leigh Newton is an up and coming talent from Gaz Mcallister’s Phoenix Thai Boxing. Leigh has fought on the best UK promotions, including Victory, Duel and S3 Fight League. She looks set to continue to die in the rankings and challenge for the top spot.
Under the tutelage of Michael Dicks at DBMA, Eddie Gill is currently ranked number 7 in the UK’s competitive Light Heavyweight division. Eddie has fought on Victory, Power of Scotland and on the Polish promotion MFC where he faced off against multiple title holder Paweł Jędrzejczyk.
The North East Muay Thai scene is constantly growing, with new fighters rising up each year to take on fights at local promotions like Victory and Duel, both of which allow young competitors a top-class stage on which to prove their mettle and show the world the high level of Muay Thai in the North East.
